Eskrima

The name, Eskrima, or as spelled in America, Escrima, comes from the Spanish word, “esgrima” (fencing) which was used to describe stick fighting, and the word Arnes, also from Spanish means armor. Though historically the basic skills of Eskrima are simplistic and secretive by tradition, and passed through families and clans, modern Escrima now contains many styles and systems, and have been introduced to the world by a number of Eskrimadora masters, many who were immigrants to America in the early 1900‘s.

The Philippine Islands at the time the first Spanish ships arrived in the late 1500’s were populated by peoples of many different clans and dialects, often warring among each other, and necessitating the use of virtually any kind of weapon available from fishing or farm tools to open hand combat. The styles or systems in use while not complicated, were, in the hands of masters proven to be deadly.

In close combat, the empty hand techniques emphasized the disabling and destruction of limbs, and the weapon is simply an extension of the hands. Though the word “simplistic” is often used to describe the basic skills employed in the Eskrima Art, yet, within simple concepts are complex and difficult techniques, requiring many years to master.
