James Masayoshi Mitose, (December 30, 1916 - March 26, 1981) was a Japanese American Martial Artist who introduced the art of Kosho Ryu Kenpo into the Territory of Hawaii in the late 1930s. Grand Master James M. Mitose was born in Hawaii, and at the age of four, he was sent to Japan to study the family art of Kosho Ryu Kenpo. Upon completing 15 years of training Mitose returned to Hawaii. There he opened the first Official Self-Defense Club of Hawaii, and decided to share his family art with people of all races, and began teaching Kosho Ryu Kenpo. After 15 years of teaching the art of Kosho Ryu Kenpo, Mitose awarded the rank of first degree black belt to only six of his dedicated students. These were: William KS Chow, Jiro Nakamura, Thomas Young, Paul Yamaguchi, Arthur Keawe, and Edward Lowe. Just before his untimely death in 1981, James M. Mitose passed the family art of Kosho Ryu Kenpo onto his son, Thomas B. Mitose.
